Work description: PROJECT: Renewable Power Matrix for Sustainable Energy Supply in Galapagos Islands - an Electrical Distributed Grid Based on Solar-Wind Generation The energy supply in Galapagos Islands predominantly relies on fossil fuels (83.6% in 2018) endangering that fragile ecosystem. Ecuador has the commitment to achieve a total decarbonization of the islands by 2050, where the main effort is focused on a significant, gradual and expansive change in the energy matrix towards the use of renewable energy sources. This proposal aims to contribute in planning the clean and sustainable energy supply on Galapagos Islands, focusing on three key factors: (a) Develop a techno-economic model to include the wind generation (off/on-shore) into the simulation tool developed in a previous USFQ’s project (which only considered solar generation) and re-evaluate the long-term analysis of the energy matrix for a solar-wind-ESS based one. (b) Map the specific locations to install solar and wind plants (distributed generation grid) considering territorial planning criteria and environmental impact assessment, and (c) develop a short-term simulation-based analysis to evaluate the optimal operation (energy management proposal) of the power plants and energy storage systems. JOB DESCRIPTION 1. Collaborate in the develop a techno-economic model to include the wind generation (off-shore, on-shore) into the simulation tool previously developed and re-evaluate the long-term analysis of the energy matrix in Galápagos for a solar-wind-ESS based one. 2. Map the specific locations to install solar and wind plants (distributed generation grid) considering territorial planning criteria and environmental impact assessment of the islands (case study: San Cristobal). It is worth to mention that for this objective, we currently count with 3 local students of the Environmental Management program studying in the San Cristobal´s campus who are working in their final projects aligned with this proposal (map of the geographical locations to install power plants, development of a methodology to measure the environmental impact of each possible location and baseline study for the waste management from lithium batteries that will be installed as energy storage systems. 3. Develop a short-term simulation-based analysis to evaluate the optimal operation (energy management proposal) of the power plants and energy storage systems considering different factors such as: power/energy demand, energy surplus from the power plants, gradual integration of electric vehicles (land and maritime), stability of the electrical grid. At the end of September 2024 an event will be organized in Galapagos about the project, the student can collaborate in the event. In the case that the student will want to participate, all travel expenses, flights, food and lodging must be covered by the student.
