Work description:
ProjectThe student will have the opportunity to participate in diverse projects focused on Ecuador's fascinating biodiversity. One project seeks to establish a standardized protocol for sex identification in king buzzards using various sample types like feathers and blood. This will aid conservation efforts by providing accurate data on population demographics. Another project tackles the issue of bird mortality on the San Cristobal-Puerto Chino highway. Using DNA barcoding, scientists aim to identify run-over victims even when their morphology is compromised, shedding light on the species most affected and informing mitigation strategies. A third project seeks to understand the genetic diversity and structure of the Andean bear using hair samples. DNA is extracted from these samples and different markers are analyzed to construct haplotype maps and assess genetic diversity and population structure. Finally, a new project explores the genomic adaptations of mortiño to high altitudes. This will be done by sequencing the genomes of samples collected across the Ecuadorian highlands and identifying the genetic adaptations that allow this species to flourish in harsh conditions.Activities:- DNA and RNA extraction and purification- PCR- Gel electrophoresis and interpretation- Genomic library preparation- Long-read sequencing using MinION
