Work description:
In recent years, machinability plays important role to enhance the tool life. There are number of methods to improve machinabity, wherein spheroidisation is the optimum route to enhance machinability of medum/high carbon alloy steels. Spheroidisation heat treatment modifies the shape of carbides into spheroidal/globular form. Spheroidal/globular form offers least resistance for the machining process and even dislocations bypass these obstacles with minimum resistance. 100 to 200% additional improvement in tool life is expected after spheroidisation. Austenitising temperature, method of heating, soaking time, isothermal temperature used and exposure duration in the isothermal temperature and cooling rate are regarded as the process variables. There is provision to alter the heat treatment cycle. Cemented carbide, CBN tools are costlier and frequent replacement of tools may shoot up the production cost. So cheaper heat treatment methods designed to blunt the sharp cornered carbides may improve the productivity. Objective of the research is to: (1) Change the morphology of micro-constituent phases, especially the simple and alloy carbides into spheroidal/globular form. (2) Turning machinability study by Critical Flank wear method.
